Commercial Underwriter

The Commercial Underwriter is responsible for underwriting and pricing new business for Builders Risk submissions and providing high quality underwriting, while balancing company philosophies in order to maintain a profitable book of business.  


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Underwrite commercial builder risk business along with residential and contractors equipment business as needed; new and renewal business, within underwriting authority and program limits.
  • Adhere to all underwriting guidelines, authority levels and standards.
  • Collaborate with Senior Underwriters to grow commercial builders risk book.
  • Perform file audits on counterparts and service team members, as assigned.
  • Possess in depth working knowledge of commercial builders risk products in order to assist internal employees and external customers with inquiries.
  • Mentoring and training of team members.
  • Perform on-the-job training and classroom instructions as appropriate for technical and non-technical competencies.
  • Build solid relationships with agency and company personnel. Ability to promote US Assure programs to our agency distribution force.
  • Work in partnership with stakeholders and US Assure’s corporate vision and mission.

  • Proven knowledge of coverage and pricing for commercial risks along with all other builders risk products and/or proven knowledge of property and casualty underwriting.
  • Knowledge of insurance underwriting procedures and regulations for assigned territories.
  • Strong knowledge of processing methods and workflow procedures.
  • Ability to build relationships with distributors and business partners.
  • Proven knowledge of accepted business software such as RMS, mainframe systems and Internet usage.


 Education and/or Experience and Abilities


  • College graduate, preferred
  • Completion of insurance industry specific courses (IIA, CISR, CIC and/or CPCU) and/or designations, preferred.
  • Four plus years in property underwriting.
  • One year of US Assure level 3A underwriting authority, preferred.
  • Proven experience with mentoring employees.
